Digital cameras has greatly benefited video. It has allowed the average person to easily tape anything with out worrying about film. Thanks to our shrinking technology, we can easily fit a significant about of time of high quality video on a small memory card in the camera.
While hard drive and memory card driven camcorders are taking over the consumer camcorder market, they still do not offer the same quality as the digital tape standards of MiniDV and HDV. On the professional level, Panasonic makes incredibly high powered memory cards that are powered by PCMCIA or PC CARD slots on cameras and can record footage that rivals that of which can be stored on tapes, and these are called P2 Cards. The one drawback to these cards is that it their price, with 16GB cards costing around $800 per card. Though, as CMOS chip powers increase as well as their sensitivity to light and color, smaller memory card driven camcorders will surpass the tape standard.
